Emily Richter is a second-year Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist in 2023-24. Last season, her roles included Second Wood Sprite in Rusalka, Ginevra in Ariodante, and Ines in Il Trovatore. This season, her roles include Berta in The Barber of Seville, Iphigénie in Iphigénie en Tauride, and “Ma” Zegner in Proving Up.
Emily Richter is a lyric soprano from Arlington, VA. Having benefitted from growing up all over the world from Zimbabwe to Armenia, including musical centers such as London and Tokyo, Emily tries to bring a global perspective on what it means to be an artist.
Emily was a 2023 1st Prize Winner of the Mildred Miller Competition, an award which comes with a recital in Pittsburgh as part of the Legends in the Making Series. She won 2nd place at the 2023 Great Lakes Regionals as well as being a 2022 MONC Minnesota Encouragement Award Winner and a 2020 MONC Illinois District Winner. Emily was a 2021 winner of the Wirth Prize, which awarded her a generous scholarship that has enabled her to start the next phase of her career.
Emily was a 2022 Apprentice Artist with Santa Fe Opera where she covered the role of Micaela in Carmen. In 2023, she was an Apprentice at Central City Opera where she covered the role of Desdemona in Rossini’s Otello and won the Outstanding Young Artist Award. She spent her 2020 summer at Seagle Festival. Emily just recently graduated with her Master’s from McGill’s Schulich School of Music and received her BM in Vocal Performance from Lawrence University.
