Pittsburgh Opera’s extensive Education and Outreach programs have earned the company a prestigious spot as a finalist in the 2019 International Opera Awards.
The annual awards celebrate achievements in opera around the world, recognizing excellence in categories including performance, design and direction, as well as education and outreach. Pittsburgh Opera is one of just six finalists – and the only finalist from the United States - in the Education and Outreach category.
The other finalists are:
- English Touring Opera
- Festival d’Aix-en-Provence
- Komische Oper Berlin
- Opéra de Lyon
- Umculo Cape Festival, Cape Town, South Africa
“Our education and outreach programs are an integral component of our overall mission to enrich the tri-state area,” said Pittsburgh Opera General Director Christopher Hahn. “It’s gratifying to see them recognized in this way.”
Pittsburgh Opera’s education and outreach programs reach over 20,000 students and 800 teachers, spanning 35 school districts across 13 counties and three states. There are specially-designed programs for educators, students, adults, families, and patrons with special needs. Programs include:
- Student Matinees
- High School Apprentices
- High School Vocal Mock Auditions
- Opera Trunks
- Workshops for Educators
- Opera Academy
- Opera Opportunity
- Opera Connections
- Audio Description
The shortlist was compiled by an international jury chaired by John Allison, editor of Opera magazine. The winners will be announced at a gala event in London on April 29th.
