Family Day consists of four different activities designed to expose children, teens, and their families to some of the many different components that make up opera.
Participants will be split into four groups, which will rotate throughout the four activities. Each participant and group will participate in all four activities from 10 AM-12 PM:
- Musical instrument show and tell: volunteers from the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO) will show, discuss, and demonstrate the wide range of musical instruments often found in an opera’s orchestra.
- Voice lesson: children will learn about different voice types, how to use proper breath support, how to project their voices, and more from volunteers from the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus.
- Opera Storytime: children will be immersed in the story of The Great Poochini--dog by day, opera star by night.
- Costume exploration: children will get to try on costumes and learn how costumes convey information about the characters we see on stage.
There is no minimum age to attend. Parents/guardians must accompany children younger than high school age, so they can enjoy the activities with their children. Each family will receive a free goody bag at the end of the event.
Following the Family Day activities will be our April Brown Bag concert at 12 PM that is open to Family Day participants as well as the general public.
Those who are only attending the Brown Bag concert are asked to arrive no earlier than 11:45 AM.
The FRIENDS of Pittsburgh Opera will be providing free snacks, and the El Rincón Oaxaqueño food truck will have delectable delights available on site for lunch purchases after the Brown Bag concert.
